I want to emphasize that I take a variety of different supplements that my parents and I have researched following my specific blood test and the nutrients that I needed to take. While they may benefit me, they may not have the same benefits for you, which is something that you have to be wary out. The next few nutrition posts will include the various supplements I take, the specific nutrients they have and their possible benefits, and then the impact I have felt it had on me to encompass the complete diet that has helped me over the last few years. Although, I would recommend taking supplements that work with your body because it can boost your immune system and ensure you have specific nutrients to maintain a healthy body.
The first supplement that I will be discussing is the Bone Builder Active supplement by Metagenics. I take this supplement once each night and have been doing so for about the last year. The website advertises that it provides bone health and bone strength that can be reduced by the muscular dystrophy condition. Since the disease weakens muscles, your bones are more vulnerable to experience injury if you were to trip. This supplement will prevent you from hurting yourself as much and breaking a bone that requires an extended time to recover. Since Muscular Dystrophy needs you to be active every day to avoid muscle loss, it is imperative to have bone strength. If you have weak bone strength and find in a blood test that you lack some of the nutrients in the product, I would highly recommend it. I would again like to emphasize that you should check with your doctor before trying any supplements if it can have negative consequences.
The main ingredients this product includes are Vitamin C, Hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC), Vitamin D, Niacin, Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, and Boron. The Metagenics website discusses how MCHC “contains naturally occurring calcium, phosphorus, trace amounts of other minerals, bone growth factors, and collagen and other vital bone proteins.” It also says how the formula within the supplement “[supports] bone mineral density, and also feature Vitamin D, additional minerals, glucosamine, and vitamin C for enhanced bone and joint health support.” The website also states how Hydroxyapatite concentrate is “backed by more than 30 years of research,” demonstrating that the product has proper nutrients and is safe to take given the right conditions.
In Kathleen M. Zelman’s The Benefits of Vitamin C article mentions that Vitamin C “[is] involved in many body functions, including [the] formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.” On top of improving bone health, it has several more uses that are extremely important. People excrete Vitamin C, so there are no issues with consuming too much of it except for diarrhea and stomach pains, making it a safe supplement. When I am sick, I gain Vitamin C in fruits, vegetables, smoothies, and in supplement form, which helps me get better faster. When I consume Vitamin C in any way, I feel an outburst of energy, which prevents me from getting sick during the winter. Ever since I began using Vitamin C, I have been ill less often, and when I get sick, I recover within a few days instead of a week or two. In my opinion, Vitamin C is well-needed nutrients, and people sure ensure they have the correct amount of it to live a healthy lifestyle.
Boron is another nutrient that I would like to highlight within this supplement because it is not a common one that people take. In an article by Algae Cal called the Top Health Benefits of Boron, one of the images discusses one crucial benefit: “Born help to speed up metabolic processes like bone growth and wound healing.” In summary, the metabolic process is the various chemical reactions that occur to maintain equilibrium within your body. The fact that Boron speeds up this process acts as a catalyst that can work to maintain homeostasis more effectively and to reduce the risk of becoming sick in the future. As I have said before, you want to be able to continue doing activities without recovering from a sickness that shows how vital this nutrient is within your body. Since a muscular biopsy or a simple injury creates wounds, Boron is incredibly essential because it reduces scar tissue and helps heal more effectively. This means that you would recover more effectively and maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep your body as good as it possibly can be. This supplement makes me feel more energetic, enhances my ability to exercise without getting tired, and makes sure that I can recover from any injury.
Finally, Dr. Gary A, Bachman discusses the importance of Hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC) in his article that discusses bones. In a table, he states that MCHC is a “well-absorbed Calcium source… [and a] comprehensive bone nourishment,” that work to keep healthy and strong bones. As stated earlier, it contains many other nutrients that work to enhance fit and robust bones within your body. This provides a great source of Calcium that is commonly known as the primary nutrient that maintains healthy bones. Personally, Calcium has been a supplement I have been taken for at least four years now, and every session I spend at UCLA, they test my bones, which have continued to improve in mass. I also feel amazing with all these supplements and feel that my bones are continually growing in strength, along with my gradual muscle growth.
The supplements must be doing something right because I have not witnessed any disadvantages from taking all of these supplements. I think the supplements I take are practical and very important in retaining my healthy lifestyle. Make sure you ask for your doctor’s opinion and take a blood test to see what type of supplements you should include in your lifestyle. Everyone should take supplements in the world, but it is crucial for people with muscular dystrophy because they could have dire impacts on your health and the rate at which the muscular dystrophy condition worsens your body.
I included websites that may or may not be scientifically accurate, but my personal experience proves the numerous benefits of these supplements. I do believe that further research has to be taken for these supplements to determine the possible effects of receiving them. Since there is not an abundant amount of research about supplements, I wanted to state that the supplements help me feel universally better with my whole body and should be within everybody’s lifestyle.
